Ever heard big lies and white lies? What occasion do you lie?

While growing up, I’ve heard people saying that lying sometimes is good in life; like accepting a job and getting paid for it but not knowing how to do the job. Or lying to someone to avoid getting hurt.

On the other hand, big lies are things that can cause further damage, such as telling someone to drink bleach to prevent covid-19 infection, or telling people that covid-19 is a big hoax and does not exist.

In the beginning of my professional career, I lied a few times to get myself a job that was beyond my expertise. There was a local retailer that needed help building a website to capture customer leads, I lied to the store owner claiming that I’ve built websites before and know how to do it again. When in reality, I can only accomplish a ‘hello world’ print statement which is useless to attracting customers.

In this scenario, lying to the store owner was a white lie because it caused no further harm, some might disagree. I promised something I was unable to do. However, I took the task seriously and went on to learn from Youtube. Two months later I built a good website and launched it on the web for the first time, everything was brand new.

Looking back, I can certainly say that this was the best occasion to lie. Without it, I might have not been introduced to programming on a deeper level and it would’ve taken me a couple years to launch a meaningful website online.
